Some people arrive at the walk carrying something. By the end, they realise they are not carrying it alone.
That is the quiet engine behind the Purple Wellness Walks, a monthly gathering inspired by the children’s book Little Ms Purple: Khensani’s Green Planet Quest by GB Langa. The walks take the book off the shelf and turn it into a living experience — a morning spent on your feet, with a pen, a journal and a circle of people who do not stay strangers for long.
From page to practice
Langa never set out to build a movement. It began with a simple question about teachers. How can a school look after its children if no one is looking after the adults holding it together? From that question came a journal, then a circle, and eventually a walk. What started as a personal act of healing became a shared ritual.
The walk has its rhythm. People gather in the morning, warm up and set off with a prompt from that month’s journal. They sit with it alone for a while, then pair up and share. By the time they reach the end, they are talking properly — the kind of talking that has gone quiet in a world of screens and quick replies.
Healing in motion
Langa speaks about it from the inside:
“I built this out of my own healing. I was the doctor who made the pill, then I took the pill I never knew I needed.”
At the centre of it all is Khensani, the eight‑year‑old heroine of Little Ms Purple. Brave enough to stand in front of the people who run the world and ask them to do better, Khensani’s spirit walks alongside the group. As she says in the book:
“Because you have a big heart, you’re brave, you’re smart and you play your part purple.”
The walkers carry a little of that courage with them, each step a reminder that healing is not solitary, but collective.
A space for audacity
The walks begin and end at Starbucks, coffee in hand, conversation flowing between the two stores. It is not about distance or pace, but about presence. About daring to heal, with audacity.
As Langa reflects:
“Some have mastered the language of healing without healing. Purple says dare to heal, with audacity.”
The Purple Wellness Walks are not just about wellness. They are about reclaiming the art of connection, about finding strength in shared vulnerability, and about carrying each other’s stories as lightly as possible.
